News from NEMA
NEMA extends its sincere sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of museum guard Stephen T. Johns, who lost his life while safeguarding the public and his coworkers at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum on Wednesday, June 10th. In demonstrating the values of care and service to the community he represented the ideals of his institution and the museum field honorably and well.
In light of this incident, we have posted a .pdf booklet from the Department of Homeland Security, Active Shooter, How to Respond. The materials provide guidance - in booklet, pocket card, and poster form for the immediate actions to take in the event of an active shooter in your museum. Policies to deal with such a tragedy should be a part of every organization's emergency planning.
The NEMA office will be closed July 2-3, 2009.
