All-Volunteer Historical Societies and Museums
Tuesday, November 10, 2009
10:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Nashua Historical Society
Nashua, New Hampshire
Co-sponsored by The Association of Historical Societies of New Hampshire
Registration Deadline: October 30
NEMA is delighted to have the support of the Association of Historical Societies of New Hampshire in offering a pre-conference program exclusively for all-volunteer organizations. These groups safeguard and provide access to our cultural heritage without key resources that most NEMA members enjoy. If your organization has NO paid staff, we invite you to join this program.
This workshop, designed for organizations without paid staff, was developed in response to the needs that you have identified:
Morning session: Basic Housekeeping
In contrast to a paid staff member having regular hours, volunteers must organize themselves to keep ahead of the never-ending task of housekeeping as their time is available. Yet maintaining a clean environment free of dust, dirt and cobwebs is more important for historical artifacts than it is for our own homes.
David Lee Colglazier, of Londonderry, NH, former Conservator at Old Sturbridge Village, will discuss how to set schedules for housekeeping and will teach basic techniques for cleaning furniture, textiles and other artifacts safely.
Lunch on Your Own
Afternoon session: Basic Research
Answering an inquiry from a visitor or correspondent involves knowing which sources to consult, in what order, and how to document your work. Some volunteers don’t have this background. Others do, but they just aren’t available.
Susan Abele, Curator of Manuscripts and Photographs at the Newton History Museum/Jackson Homestead in Newton, MA, will introduce you to the key sources of genealogical information and local history, basic research techniques, and how to document your work.
Registration is limited to 20 participants. Priority will be given to New Hampshire organizations.
